A RARE ‘BIRD’ AGATE DZI BEAD Tibet, 19th century or earlier. Of elongated tubular form with slightly tapering ends, featuring a pair of bird motifs enclosed within lobed cartouches on opposing sides, flanked by bands and all skillfully etched onto the surface. The opaque agate of black color with white etching. Central drilling allowing for suspension as a pendant. Dimensions: Length 5.9 cm The bird Dzi bead symbolizes freedom and the connection between the earthly and celestial realms. Birds are traditionally regarded as messengers and mediators capable of traversing different worlds. In Tibetan belief, paired birds may also signify balance, companionship, and the strengthening of emotional or familial bonds.
