† THANGKA WITH ONE OF THE FIVE LONG-LIFE SISTERS (TSERINGMA), TIBET, 1900s Tibet, around 1900. Distemper and gold on cloth. The central deity depicted seated side-saddle atop a deer amidst swirling clouds and a lush mountainous landscape, holding a mirror in her raised right hand and wearing an elaborate headdress. The upper register centered by a seated Buddha, flanked by attendant deities. The lower register with the four-armed Avalokiteshvara, Green Tara, and Guru Rinpoche. The composition enclosed within a richly decorated border featuring confronting dragons and scrolling foliage. Inscriptions: To the reverse, an inscription reading, "May all sentient beings steadily proceed to a state of happiness and blessings", repeated twice. Red handprints likely left by the lama who wrote, or commissioned, the inscription. Dimensions: 149 x 117.2 cm The Five Long-Life Sisters (Tseringma) are a group of Himalayan mountain goddesses associated with longevity, prosperity, and protection. According to Tibetan Buddhist tradition, they were subdued and converted into protectors of the Dharma by Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche). The present painting depicts the sister known as "She with the Hat and Beautiful Voice", identifiable by her distinctive headdress, mirror attribute, and deer mount.
