A THANGKA WITH EKADASHAMUKHA AVALOKITESHVARA, TIBET, 1900s Tibet, around 1900. Distemper and gold on cloth. The eleven-headed and multi-armed Avalokiteshvara standing upon a lotus pedestal, the principal hands joined in anjali mudra, holding a sacred jewel, before the chest. The additional hands hold various attributes including a lotus and a wheel, while the stacked heads rise above the principal face and culminate in a wrathful and peaceful hierarchy of heads. The bodhisattva is framed by an ornate aureole and surrounded by flowering vines. The upper register adorned with Buddha images, while the lower register contains attendant figures and auspicious emblems. Inscriptions: To the reverse, consecration syllables in red pigment. Dimensions: 76 x 52.5 cm Ekadashamukha Avalokiteshvara, the Eleven-Headed Lord of Compassion, is one of the most important manifestations of Avalokiteshvara in Tibetan Buddhism. The multiple heads symbolize his ability to perceive the suffering of beings throughout all realms of existence, while the thousand arms and eyes represent his capacity to extend compassionate aid in every direction. This iconography embodies the bodhisattva's vow to liberate all sentient beings from suffering.
