† A THANGKA DEPICTING AVALOKITESHVARA, TIBET, 19TH CENTURY Tibet, 19th century. Distemper on cloth. The white-bodied Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig), Bodhisattva of Infinite Compassion, seated in dhyanasana upon a lotus throne before a grand multi-tiered celestial palace. He holds a fly whisk in his raised right hand and a blue cintamani (wish-fulfilling jewel) in his left. The deity is flanked by attendant bodhisattvas and surrounded by monks, teachers, and celestial figures. In the foreground stands a white stupa set within a landscaped monastic setting, while the upper corners contain further Buddhist figures enthroned amidst clouds. Inscriptions: To the reverse, "Om Ah Hum", likely inscribed by a lama during the consecration of the painting. Dimensions: 139 x 111 cm Avalokiteshvara, known in Tibet as Chenrezig, is the embodiment of universal compassion and among the most revered figures of Tibetan Buddhism. The blue cintamani held in his hand symbolizes the fulfillment of spiritual aspirations and the dispelling of ignorance. The prominent white stupa depicted in the lower register may commemorate a revered lama or important religious figure, suggesting a memorial or devotional context for the painting. Particularly noteworthy is the finely executed aureole surrounding the deity, which displays intricate ornamental detail and contributes to the harmonious overall composition. 13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU.
