A LARGE THANGKA DEPICTING TAGLA MEMBAR, TIBET, 16TH-17TH CENTURY Tibet, 16th - 17th century. The fierce Bon tutelary deity Tagla Membar shown standing in a dynamic posture upon a lotus pedestal, engulfed by a flaming aureole. He holds a golden wheel in his raised right hand and a ritual attribute in the left, while serpents coil around his body and limbs. Adorned with a garland of severed heads and wearing a tiger-skin garment, the deity is surrounded by a multitude of subsidiary figures, animals, protective spirits, and celestial beings rendered throughout the composition. The upper register centered by a Buddha and further deities set amidst clouds. Inscriptions: The backside panel blessed and signed by H.H. the 34th Menri Trizin, the current head of the Yungdrung Bon tradition (photo documented). Dimensions: Frame 107.5 x 83.2 cm, Image 79 x 61.5 cm Tagla Membar, "Tiger-God Flaming with Fire", is one of the principal wrathful protector deities of the Yungdrung Bon tradition. Regarded as a fierce emanation associated with the teachings of Tonpa Shenrab, he functions as a powerful guardian who transforms obstacles, ignorance, and harmful influences into spiritual strength. He is commonly depicted amidst flames, bearing a golden wheel and other ritual attributes, symbolizing the active protection of the Bon doctrine.
