A THANGKA DEPICTING AMITAYUS WITH PROTECTIVE DEITIES, TIBET, 19TH CENTURY Tibet, 19th century. Distemper on cloth. Amitayus, the Buddha of Infinite Life, depicted seated in dhyana mudra upon a lotus throne. The white-bodied deity is adorned with princely ornaments and celestial scarves and framed by a radiant aureole. The upper register centered by a Buddha and flanked by attendant deities, while the lower registers contain a rich assembly of wrathful protectors and guardian figures set amidst flames, clouds, and mountainous landscapes. Mounted as a traditional Tibetan thangka with dark blue cotton brocade borders and a protective silk cover. Inscriptions: Old consecration inscriptions to the reverse. Dimensions: Mount 92 x 66.5 cm, Image 62 x 45.2 cm Amitayus, the Buddha of Infinite Life, is one of the most revered deities associated with longevity, merit, and wisdom. Thangkas depicting Amitayus were frequently commissioned to promote health, longevity, and spiritual well-being, and often combine the peaceful central deity with a retinue of protective guardians charged with removing obstacles to a long and prosperous life.
