A GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF MANJUSHRI, NEPAL, 20TH CENTURY The bodhisattva is finely cast seated in dhyanasana upon a double-lotus base, the hands held in dharmachakra mudra while delicately grasping the tips of lotus stems rising to blossom at the shoulders and supporting a book to the left. He wears a flowing dhoti and is adorned with beaded pendant jewelry. The face is sensitively modeled with a composed expression, defined by heavy-lidded downcast eyes and gently pursed lips forming a subtle smile. The hair is arranged in a tiered chignon, with loose tresses falling over the shoulders, and surmounted by a five-leaf tiara. The base is sealed with a gilt-bronze plate. Dimensions: Height 21 cm Literature comparison: The present lot takes inspiration from highly celebrated works of the 15th and 16th centuries produced by Newar artists of Nepal's Kathmandu Valley. Compare a related earlier gilt bronze figure of Prajnaparamita, made by Nepalese artists in Tibet, dated 16th century, 24.5 cm high, at Koller, Zurich, 7 May 2013, lot 108. Compare a related earlier gilt bronze figure of a bodhisattva, Tibet or Nepal, dated to the 15th-16th century, in the Tokyo National Museum, collection reference no. TC-1.
