A COPPER-BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA AMITAYUS, NEPAL, 19TH CENTURY Nepal, 19th century. Amitayus is depicted seated in a meditative posture (Dhyanasana) on a richly ornamented lotus base, exuding serenity through his downcast, introspective eyes, firm brow, and broad nose, centered by an urna that emphasizes his divine presence. He holds the Long-Life Vase (amrita) in his hands, supported in dhyana mudra above his lap. The figure wears a long dhoti with gracefully gathered pleats, adorned with intricate jewelry, and a flowing shawl entwined along his arms. His hair is styled in a tall chignon, secured by an elaborate tiara. Dimensions: Height 12.6 cm; length 8.5 cm Amitayus, a form of Buddha Amitabha in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, is associated with longevity, wisdom, and immortality. He is typically depicted wearing an ornate crown and holding a vase of amrita, the nectar of immortality. In Tibetan and Nepalese Buddhist art, Amitayus plays a central role in longevity rituals and is revered for overcoming karmic obstacles. His image is widely represented in sculptures and temple decorations, symbolizing enlightenment and the aspiration for a long, spiritually fulfilled life.
