A COPPER-ALLOY 'KHYUNG', THOGCHAG, IN GOLD MOUNTING, 12TH - 15TH CENTURY Tibet. Powerfully modeled in the form of a Garuda (khyung), with a snake held in its beak and wings outstretched. Set in a modern 21k gold frame and fitted with a movable loop for suspension. Dimensions: Height 5 cm Thogchags are amulets which are said to have fallen from the sky according to traditional folklore. These are traditionally believed to contain a magical, protective power comparable to Tibetan dzi beads. Originally made to function as horse harnesses, buckles, fibulae, and arrow heads, years later after their creation they are reused by Tibetans as protective amulets and adornments for clothing, lighters and purses.
