AN INLAID ROCK CRYSTAL VAJRA, c. 1900s Tibet, late 19th to early 20th century. Finely carved from rock crystal, this four-pronged vajra is densely inlaid with an array of hardstones and glass cabochons, each set within gilt and silvered metal mounts and framed by beaded borders. Dimensions: Length 14.5 cm While vajras are traditionally made of bronze, the present example is exceptionally carved from rock crystal, a highly unusual and precious material. The vajra, a symbol of indestructability and power, is one of the primary ritual symbols in Tibetan Buddhism. Derived from Sanskrit and translates to both thunderbolt and diamond, the vajra consists of two sets of prongs from which lotus petals emanate, flanking a central sphere. Often used in combination with a bell, which represents feminine wisdom, the vajra symbolizes the masculine attribute of skillful means or compassion.
