Presentation Tray. A Russian .875 silver oval presentation tray featuring a pierced gallery border with integrated handles. The tray is struck with Polish and Russian Imperial-era hallmarks, including the Polish kokoshnik mark for the second silver standard (.875), a Warsaw assay office “W?? mark, and matching “84?? silver standard marks on both handles. The Polish verification marks present on the tray were used from 1920 to 1931, providing a post-Imperial Polish re-assay date range for the piece. Additional hallmarks include the Lombard Owl import verification mark, applied to previously used precious metal objects re-certified for legal trade, together with the supplemental Polish verification mark depicting the profile of a woman within a circular cartouche. Also present are a partial, illegible Russian assay master )s mark and what appears to be a fragmentary city mark. The reverse is engraved: "September 5th 1914 - 1939 Sybil & Bill Whitehouse - Harriet & Ledyard Blair - Kitten Norman - Julia Berwind - Ruth Twombly - Schuyler Parsons - Marian & Forsyth Wickes - Roberta & Robert Goelet" The inscription most surely commemorates the twenty-fifth wedding anniversary of Sybil and Bill Whitehouse and records the names of several prominent members of the elite Newport, Rhode Island social and yachting community. Among those listed are C. Ledyard Blair, Commodore of the New York Yacht Club and an influential figure in American sailing; Robert and Roberta Goelet, members of the distinguished Goelet family and active participants in Newport yachting circles; Julia Berwind, associated with "The Elms" estate; Ruth Twombly of the Vanderbilt family; Schuyler Parsons; Marian and Forsyth Wickes; and "Kitten" Norman of the well-known Newport Norman family. Sybil Whitehouse was the daughter of William Proctor Douglas, the celebrated yachtsman whose yacht "Sappho" successfully defended the America's Cup in 1871. Collectively, the engraved names represent a remarkable cross-section of Newport's Golden Age society and the closely connected New York Yacht Club community.
