G. Payne & Son English silver tankard of slightly tapered form displaying a beast form scrolling handle with applied hedgehog form finial, and set atop three recumbent lion form feet. Inscription to the rim reads, "Sum: poculum: Johannis: Turner: Ettlinger: Semicom: Coll: B: Magd: apud: Oxon: amno: Dni: MCMXLVI.". Birmingham, G. Payne & Son, 1930; with a retailer's stamp of, "Payne Oxford" to the underside. Similar tankard was sold Christie's on October 23rd, 2000 stating, "The 1669 Kyrle tankard by Thomas Jenkins is the inspiration for this tankard, retailed by Payne and Son Ltd., Oxford. The distinctive hedgehog thumbpiece is the crest of John Kyrle, "the Man of Ross," who donated the Jenkins's tankard to Balliol College, Oxford.".
