In 1973, he became a lecturer at the Middlesex Polytechnic. By the late 1970s, Degen had become interested in the three-dimensional quality of the assemblaged pieces and the shadows which they cast. The shadows became an integral part of the pieces and he began a series of shadow pieces or Extensions as he has called them. Made of steel rod and thin cord, in strong light they were nearly indistinguishable from their cast shadows.
