A LOUIS XVI STYLE ORMOLU MOUNTED WHITE MARBLE MANTEL CLOCK 'VASE PENDULE A DAUPHINS' PHILIBERT A PARIS, LATE 19TH CENTURY Case surmounted by a spouting fountain, dial flanked by two dolphins, case adorned with bullrushes, trailing ribbons, caduceus and stiff leaf frieze to foot and stepped marble base, the enamel dial with Arabic numerals, signed Philibert a Paris, 8 day movement striking on a bell, with outer count wheel similarly signed, with pendulum 43cm high, 10cm diameter dial, base 19.5cm squareLiterature: Pierre Verlet, Les Bronzes Dorés Français du XVIIIe siècle, 1987, p. 460, no. 12. The design for this clock draws on an example in gilt bronze mounted blue Sèvres porcelain recorded in Louis XVI's bathroom at Versailles: 'Une pendule de cheminée à vase en porcelaine bleu, ornée de deux branches de lauriers qui entoure la lunette et de deux dauphins, terminée par un jet d'eau, h. de 14 po. sur 6 po. 9 l. de large, par Roque. - Cabinet des bains'. The vase pendule à dauphins form appears for the first time in the Versailles records for 1775. The Royal example was sold at Christie's London, The Exceptional Sale, 4th July 2013 lot 22 (£433,875 inc. premium). A comparable clock of near identical form in ormolu mounted white marble with dial signed Le Montjoie A Paris was offered at Sotheby's Paris, Style - Furniture and Art Objects, 19th November 2020, lot 38.
