The sovereign of the Isles, and the Prince of Wales's feathers and American eagle above shield, signed C H Wood Del 15 M**Y PLACE, EAST, LONDON, set under associated glass clock dome and base, collection label to the underside for Hon William McAlpine Collection, 5/8/99, NO. 85 11 shell 16cm high, 9.5cm wide, dome and base 27.5cm high Charles H Wood was born in Liverpool and was a craftsman who worked in scrimshaw engraving with seashells, ox horn and eggs. His life is little documented but he seems to have progressed from an initial career as a painter and taught himself this highly detailed form of work. The majority of his works depict ships, particularly the vessels of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Similar Nautilus shells are held in the collection of the Yale Centre for British Art and the S.S Great Britain Museum.
