A LARGE PAIR OF VICTORIAN CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OAK DOUBLE SIDED LIBRARY BOOKCASES 19TH CENTURY INCORPORATING SOME 17TH CENTURY ELEMENTS Some hand inscribed alphabet details, each of double sided form with adjustable shelves, the upper friezes carved with grape vines and the pilasters with berried foliage, one end with moulded panels, the other unfinished slight variance- taller 224cm high, 223cm long, 98cm deep, the other 222cm high, 222cm long and 97cm deepProvenance: Clare College, Cambridge removed by Sir William McAlpine. Someone at Clare College asked my husband to go and look at some bookcases they were hoping to move. Bill was curious as he hadn't suggested to anyone that he needed more bookcases. Someone had seen his library and thought the bookstacks looked similar to those they were trying to move out of a store which, they felt, probably shouldn't just be dumped. He went to look, said send them home.. and after a year or two we put together a few of them. We have several more, in pieces. Their age is disputed but the paper that accompanied them claimed that they were 15th Century. Someone should build a Library with them, as Bill did here with some he bought earlier.Lady McAlpine From historical records it seems that these were thought to be probably constructed for the college library located over the chapel when this was refitted in 1627 and were later used in the Fellows' Library and then the Mansfield Forbes Library are now at Fawley Hill, Oxon. However it is more likely that these were made in the late 19th century in emulation of the existing panelled surroundings in which they were to be placed.
