The present pair of works provided the inspiration for Industry Illustrated: A Memoir of Thomas Jackson, Thomas Jackson was the contractor for both bridges. Structurally both these bridges are interesting; the central ironwork span of the Stamford Bridge Viaduct is thought to be that last of its type in existence that was built for a railway; all other similar types having since been demolished. The viaduct, over the River Derwent between the East Riding and North Yorkshire used to carry the York-Beverley between 1847 and 1965. The Bubwith railway viaduct (or the Bubwith Bridge) was a key engineering feature of the Selby to Market Weighton railway line in East Yorkshire. Authorized in 1846 by the York & North Midland Railway, it opened on August 1, 1848. The viaduct was the only major engineering feature on this flat 22-mile single-track section. The line, and subsequently the viaduct, fell to the Beeching cuts, closing in 1954.
