A WILLIAM IV LEATHER UPHOLSTERED MAHOGANY LIBRARY ARMCHAIR BY ROBERT DAWES, CIRCA 1830 With a reclining back, ratchetted arms and retractable footrest on turned tapering legs with brass caps and castors, stamped R. DAWES XB and GR PATENT with a crown, and with a large paper label to the underside describing the `Manner of using R. DAWS'S Patent Recumbent Easy Chair' 110cm high, 61cm wide, 82cm deep Robert Daws (or Dawes), cabinet-maker and upholder of 17 Margaret Street, Cavendish Square, patented his 'Improved Recumbent Chair' in 1827 and the design was illustrated in J.C.Loudon's Encyclopaedia of Cottage Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture, 1833, fig. 1913. A closely related chair is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, pl. 281, fig 176.A similar chair was sold from the collection of Christopher Smallwood, Dreweatts, Newbury, 13 May 2026, lot 506 (£1191 including premium).
