ROBERT PAYTON REID (BRITISH 1859-1945)THE FORTH BRIDGE FROM NORTH QUEENSFERRYOil on canvasSigned (lower right)41 x 61.5cm (16 x 24in.)Provenance:Sale, Christie's, Glasgow, 27 June 1991, lot 115The Forth Bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage listed cantilever rail bridge and the first major structure in Britain built from steel by Sir William Arrol & Co. It was finished in December 1890 and including the approach viaducts is 2467 metres long and 110 above water. Sir Alfred McAlpine's construction company was responsible for building the concrete approach roads to the bridge. The Bridge is only crossed by train and at the centenary of its opening Sir William McAlpine arranged for the Flying Scotsman to pull a chartered train across the Forth Bridge from Edinburgh on a round trip through Fife and Dundee.
