C8785)Felix Runcie Kelly (1914-1994) was an artist, illustrator, and stage-set designer who achieved critical acclaim in Britain during the twentieth century for distinctive architectural landscapes. Born in Auckland, New Zealand, he trained as a graphic artist before relocating to England in 1935 to work as a graphic designer.During the Second World War, Kelly served as a navigation officer in the Royal Air Force. In 1943, he sustained severe injuries that brought his military service to an end, and subsequently, gave him a renewed sense of focus on his artistic career. Kelly went on to build a reputation for depicting historic houses, receiving invitations to the great country homes of Britain and gaining prized commissions form their owners. In 1982, Kelly painted some murals at Castle Howard, funded by the proceeds from the television adaptation of Brideshead Revisited based on Evelyn Waugh's novel. Over the years, Kelly became renowned for his distinctive Neo-Romantic and Surrealist aesthetic, often incorporating paddle steamers, railways, red-and-white striped deckchairs, and hot air balloons into his compositions.
