A GEORGE III MAHOGANY ARMCHAIR CIRCA 1780, AFTER THE DESIGN BY VICKERS & RUTLEDGE, POSSIBLY BY GILLOWS The oval back filled with a large carved palmette above a padded serpentine seat on tapering turned, fluted and stiff leaf carved legs headed by sunflower paterae 96cm high, 62cm wide, 53cm deep Vickers & Rutledge, cabinet-makers, upholders and undertakers of Conduit Street, Hanover Square, were active from c.1766 - 1780. Their trade card illustrates a related Adam-style chair with an oval back filled with a large anthemion (published in A. Heal, The London Furniture Makers, London, 1953, p. 72, pl. 9). A similar pattern dated March 1785 was included in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books (see S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, London, 2008, vol. I, p.175, the design p.135).A suite of seat furniture of slightly differing pattern was supplied to Lyonel, 5th Earl of Dysart for Ham House, Surrey around 1780 (P. Thornton, 'Ham House', Furniture History, 1980, fig. 188).
