λ TERENCE CUNEO (BRITISH 1907-1996) EPITAPH FOR STEAM Oil on canvas Signed (lower left) 91.5 x 122cm (36 x 48in.) Provenance: Sladmore Gallery, London. Exhibited:London, The Mall Galleries, Terence Cuneo Exhibition, no. 17. Literature; Terence Cuneo, The Railway Paintings of Terence Cuneo, pub. New Cavendish Books, 1984 The present work depicts Locomotive 6009, King Charles II in the Southall Shed at night. When exhibited at The Mall Galleries it carried a different title Preparation for Departure. Writing in Railway Paintings, Cuneo analysed the impact of this type of scene: A shed scene offers the most dramatic and intimate association with the steam engine that an artist could wish for and when the night closes in, that quality is increased, ten-fold.
