New Cavendish Books, 1984 The present work depicts Locomotive 6009, King Charles II in the Southall Shed at night. When exhibited at The Mall Galleries it carried a different title Preparation for Departure. Writing in Railway Paintings, Cuneo analysed the impact of this type of scene: A shed scene offers the most dramatic and intimate association with the steam engine that an artist could wish for and when the night closes in, that quality is increased, ten-fold.
