A PAIR OF GILTWOOD AND COMPOSITION CONSOLE TABLES IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS JOHNSON, 20TH CENTURY Each with a brown variegated marble top, the stand modelled as a branching leafy tree with birds perching in its branches on a rockwork base with a squirrel and sitting terrier and an egg and dart moulded plinth 84cm high, 68cm wide, 34cm deep This pair of marble-topped pier tables, with their naturalistic gnarled tree-trunk supports and rockwork are designed in the French 'picturesque' fashion promoted by the St Martin's Lane Academy. A number of designs for such tables were published in Thomas Johnson's Collection of Designs, 1758 (inc. pl. 19) and again in his One Hundred and Fifty New Designs. 1761 (inc. pl. 41) which in turn derived from M. Lock & H. Copland's Chinoiserie designs in their New Book of Ornaments, 1752 (pl. 2).
