A PAIR OF REGENCY SIMULATED ROSEWOOD AND PARCEL GILT ARMCHAIRS EARLY 19TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY BY GILLOWS Each with an interlaced back bisected by a bidirectional arrow, scrolled arms on lion monopodia supports and a caned seat on tapering turned and slightly splayed legs, with journeyman's stamp MP 87cm high, 57cm wide, 57cm deep Provenance:Mallet, 1971. The stamp MP, the initials of the journeyman chair-maker, have been recorded on a number of chairs of similar period and/or style to those offered here. They include a set of green-painted and parcel-gilt dining-chairs sold Christie's, London, 4 July 1996, lot 269, and a pair of mahogany shell-back hall chairs sold Christie's, London, 2 October 2002, lot 269, while a set of four oak side chairs showing similarities to the work of George Bullock, sold Bonhams 13 March 2007, lot 105, were likewise marked. The initials suggest the work of a journeyman employed by a large firm of furniture makers such as Gillows, where employees often identified their work, probably for accounting purposes.
