A PAIR OF GEORGE III GILTWOOD GIRANDOLES CIRCA 1760, IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS JOHNSON Each with a ho-ho bird above an architectural rockwork, foliate and C-scroll surround enclosing divided mirrors and issuing scrolled candle branches with gilt-metal foliate sconces 91cm high, 40cm wide Provenance:Stair & Co, 1977. Thomas Johnson published his set of Twelve Girandoles, engraved by William Austin, in 1755, a collection of designs of fanciful ornament incorporating animals and birds from Barlow's illustrations of Aesop's fables. In the following years he published more designs, including frames, candle stands, pier tables etc, compiled and reissued as One Hundred and Fifty new Designs in 1761. All are in a similar style taking images from Aesop's fables and adding naturalistic elements, animals, birds and sea creatures.
