拍品描述

λ CLAUDE MUNCASTER (BRITISH 1903-1974) THE OLIVEBANK ROUNDING CAPE HORN Oil on canvas Signed and dated 1932 (lower left); further signed and extensively inscribed (to stretcher verso) 78 x 102cm (30½ x 40in.) Muncaster was born Grahame Hall, the son of the painter Oliver Hall. He was encouraged as an artist by his father, but was largely self-taught and to avoid accusations of nepotism he took his mother's maiden name alongside that of the 17th Century painter Claude Lorrain, whom he greatly admired. He profoundly loved the sea and travelled as a deck-hand, making several voyages, the sketches from which he turned into illustrated books, including Rolling Around the Horn (1933).During World War II he was a Lieutenant Commander of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and advised the Admiralty on camouflage. He was President of the Society of Marine Artists. This present work is painted on a piece of sail cloth that served as the artist's bed cover when he was onboard the Olivebank.
