MYLES BIRKET FOSTER (ENGLISH 1825-1899) BEN VENUE, LOCH ACHRAY IN THE TROSSACHS Pencil and watercolour, heightened with touches of bodycolour 22 x 30.5cm (8½ x 12in.) Provenance: The artist's studio, 1899 (according to an inscription on the reverse). Charles Nicholls & Son, Manchester, 1939. Birket Foster visited Scotland on many occasions and was often accompanied by various members of his family. In the Summer of 1869 he travelled with his father for a particularly long sketching tour of Scotland. Departing from London on the way they visited Ely, Grantham, Lincoln, York and Durham. They spent a few days in North Shields, where the artist had been born, before continuing their journey to Melrose, Abbotsford and Edinburgh. At Lanark Birket Foster drew the Falls of the Clyde and afterwards he sketched Dunblane Cathedral. They stopped again at Pitlochry before returning home through the Trossachs.
