AN UNUSUAL ROMAN AGATE EROTIC PHALLUS AMULET, CIRCA 1ST-2ND CENTURY A.D.Finely carved from banded agate with natural layers of grey, white, and amber, the amulet is fashioned in the form of a winged phallus, the upper portion detailed with incised feathers and anatomical features rendered with precision. The stone’s translucency enhances the subtle tonal gradations across its surface, while the polish remains lustrous, particularly along the contours.Minor age-related wear and surface patination are visible in recessed areas.Such amulets were intended as apotropaic charms within Roman culture, believed to ward off evil and promote fertility, prosperity, and protection through their symbolic potency.Length: 7.7cm
