A ROMAN ROCK CRYSTAL AMPHORISKOS Circa 1st Century B.C.–1st Century A.D. Carved from translucent, honey-toned rock crystal, this small amphoriskos has a compact, cylindrical body with gently rounded shoulders. The stone shows natural internal veining and cloudy inclusions, visible through the polished surface. Two pierced lug handles are carved at the neck, each drilled horizontally. The rim is slightly everted and irregular from ancient loss. The vessel’s walls exhibit a smooth finish with minor surface accretions and wear consistent with burial. The flat base is carefully ground and retains traces of earthy deposits. Rock crystal vessels of this type served as containers for precious unguents and perfumes, valued for both their material purity and their impermeability. Height: 4.9cm
