A GREEK CARNELIAN SCARABOID WITH A LION AND BES ARCHAIC PERIOD, CIRCA 580-520 B.C. Carved from translucent carnelian, this small scaraboid seal has a warm orange-red body with deeper red tones at the edges. The oval face is engraved in intaglio with a compact, symmetrical design, the polished surface allowing light to pass through the stone and animate the relief-like cutting. The design combines a lion with the frontal mask of Bes, arranged within a neatly defined border. The engraving is precise and lively, with curling locks, pointed ears and sharply incised details giving the composition a strong graphic rhythm. The rounded back and thick profile are typical of scaraboid seals intended to be handled, mounted or worn. Such gems served both as personal seals and as amuletic objects. The lion conveyed strength and protection, while Bes, an Egyptian-derived protective figure, was widely adopted across the Mediterranean. Their combination reflects the cultural exchange characteristic of the Archaic period, when Greek gem-cutters adapted Near Eastern and Egyptian motifs into a distinct visual language.
