A BYZANTINE GOLD & GEM CROSS, CIRCA 7TH CENTURY Composed of high-karat gold, this cross-shaped pendant is elaborately decorated with applied filigree granulation and beaded edging. The face is set with five cabochon garnets in both pear and oval cuts, each framed by clusters of gold granules. At the centre, a circular medallion features a cloisonné enamel rosette in dark blue and gold. The suspension loop is formed as a ribbed gold cylinder with twisted wire detailing, and the reverse is left plain with a softly burnished finish. The cross exhibits a bold, architectural silhouette with slightly flared arms and a robust profile. The harmonious arrangement of gems and ornamentation, combined with the rich yellow tone of the gold, exemplifies the opulent style of early Byzantine ecclesiastical jewellery.
