A ROMAN GOLD AND RED JASPER INTAGLIO RING, CIRCA 1ST–2ND CENTURY A.D. A substantial Roman ring, formed from a broad, heavy-gauge gold hoop and set with a circular intaglio of deep red jasper, its rich, sanguine tone glowing warmly against the softly burnished surface of the gold. The band swells gently at the shoulders into a wide, cushion-like bezel, giving the ring a powerful silhouette and the unmistakable presence of an object intended to be both seen and used. The intaglio is framed within a finely worked, rope-twist collar, its crisp beading providing a tactile counterpoint to the smooth, plain gold of the shank. Cut into the jasper is a standing figure, rendered in miniature with swift, confident lines: the body shown in classical profile, the drapery suggested by sharp incisions, and the stance composed in the restrained manner typical of early Imperial gem engraving. The engraved design catches the light differently to the stone’s polished field, creating a subtle play of shadow and relief as the ring is turned. The hoop is continuous and robust, the shoulders flaring to support the bezel in a structurally secure and visually balanced construction. The reverse is plain, with the gold surface showing the gentle undulations of hand-finishing, while the setting holds the stone flush and stable. Such rings were worn daily, not merely as ornament, but as functional seals: the intaglio would have been pressed into wax or clay to authenticate correspondence, mark ownership, or affirm personal authority.
