A GREEK BRONZE FIGURINE OF AN ATHLETE, CLASSICAL PERIOD, CIRCA 450–400 B.C. Cast in solid bronze and preserving a richly variegated surface of deep olive and malachite-green patination, this finely modelled figure captures the taut immediacy of athletic exertion. The youthful male is shown in dynamic motion, his torso pitched forward and his weight shifting onto one leg, the other lifted behind as if in mid-stride. The right arm projects forcefully from the shoulder, the hand clenched, while the left arm bends inward, balancing the composition. The silhouette is sharply profiled and rhythmically conceived, the limbs extended to create a sense of suspended movement characteristic of the Classical aesthetic. The anatomy is rendered with studied naturalism: the chest subtly expanded, the abdominal muscles lightly defined, and the shoulders broad yet supple. The head, crowned with thick, curling locks arranged in compact, drilled waves, turns slightly, the gaze intent beneath heavy lids.
