A ROMAN BRONZE PORTRAIT BUST OF THE EMPEROR TRAJAN TRAJANIC PERIOD, REIGN 98–117 A.D. Finely cast in bronze, this compelling portrait bust represents the Emperor Trajan, one of Rome’s most celebrated rulers, depicted with the sober realism and disciplined restraint characteristic of official imperial imagery of the early second century A.D. The head is shown with short, close-cropped hair arranged in carefully articulated locks that sweep forward across the forehead, framing a broad, composed face with strong jawline and firmly modelled features. The expression is calm and authoritative, the eyes deeply set beneath defined brows, conveying the resolute dignity associated with Trajan’s public persona as optimus princeps. The bust truncates at the upper chest, with a cloak fastened over the left shoulder, its folds rendered in broad, confident planes that contrast with the more detailed treatment of the hair and facial features.
