拍品描述

A ROMAN AMETHYST RING STONE DEPICTING CHARIOT RACING SCENE Circa 2nd Century A.D. An oval amethyst intaglio set within a smooth gold ring, the stone a rich translucent purple with natural internal veining. The intaglio depicts a charioteer driving a galloping quadriga, the figures rendered in low relief with clearly defined limbs and harness lines. The gold setting is plain and polished, its shank gently expanding toward the bezel. The underside of the stone is smoothly cut and polished, closely fitted within the gold bezel. Such engraved gems were used as personal seals and as markers of identity and status within the Roman world, their imagery often reflecting themes of prestige, victory, or divine favour associated with the public spectacles of the circus. Measurements: Diameter of stone: 2.2 cm Diameter of ring: 2 cm
