A MEDIEVAL SILVER RING DEPICTING A LION Circa 14th Century A.D. Cast in silver, this ring features a large, round bezel with a scalloped outer edge and a raised intaglio-style design of a lion in profile, standing with one forepaw lifted and its tail curling upward along the border. The lion is rendered with a full mane, elongated body, and defined claws, all framed by a recessed circular band. The bezel rises from a tall, flaring neck that joins a broad, flat hoop. The surfaces exhibit a dark, even patina with areas of light encrustation and minor abrasions consistent with age. The reverse of the bezel is hollowed, reflecting careful thinning to reduce weight, and the interior of the hoop shows shallow wear and tooling marks. Rings with heraldic imagery were commonly used in medieval Europe as personal insignia and sealing devices, the engraved motifs reflecting familial or individual identity within a chivalric context.
