A ROMAN GOLD RING SET WITH AN AGATE ‘EYE’ BEAD Circa 1st Century A.D. Formed from a smoothly rounded band of high-karat gold, the ring is set with an oval agate bead distinguished by its natural concentric bands of blue, white, and brown, creating a pronounced ‘eye’ motif. The stone is neatly seated within a shallow, oval bezel integrated into the broad, slightly domed upper section of the hoop. The exterior gold surfaces show a soft matte finish consistent with ancient wear, while the interior is smooth and plain. Rings of this type, fitted with naturally banded agate, belonged to a long Mediterranean tradition in which such ‘eye’ stones were appreciated for their striking appearance and were commonly mounted as personal ornaments.
