AN EGYPTIAN GOLD AND GLAZED STEATITE SCARAB SWIVEL RING New Kingdom, 19th–20th Dynasty, Circa 1279–1069 B.C. Formed in high-karat gold, this swivel ring is mounted with an oval glazed steatite scarab, its exterior carved with the characteristic anatomical detailing of the beetle’s head, clypeus, wing cases, and legs. The glaze preserves a vivid turquoise tone with areas of mottling and surface wear. The scarab is set within a gold frame of twisted wire, secured by four gold prongs at the cardinal points. The hoop is circular and solid, its upper shoulders wrapped tightly with fine gold wire to form textured sleeves that flank the rotating mount. The surfaces display a warm, even patina, and the ring structure is intact. The underside of the scarab is carved with a symmetrical motif, visible through the swivel mechanism, comprising incised lines arranged around a central axis. The glaze on this face has partially worn away, revealing the steatite core beneath. Scarab rings of this type were personal adornments imbued with amuletic significance, the rotating mechanism allowing the engraved base to be used as a seal. Their iconography and inscriptions served protective and devotional purposes, reflecting the widespread symbolic role of the scarab in New Kingdom belief.
