A ROMAN REPOUSSÉ GOLD BUST OF A GOD WITH WINGED HEAD, POSSIBLY HERMES Circa 2nd Century A.D. Formed from a thin sheet of high-karat gold, the bust depicts a bearded male divinity with pronounced facial modelling, including a full beard, deeply set eyes, and a sharply defined brow. The hair is massed in heavy curls, surmounted by two small wing-like projections at the temples. The figure wears a draped himation falling in broad, overlapping folds across the chest. The repoussé surface shows minor creasing and slight undulation consistent with ancient hammering. The reverse is plain and concave, retaining the impressions of the repoussé work. Small attachment tabs remain projecting from each shoulder, indicating its original function as an applied ornament. Busts of this type were produced as decorative fittings for luxury objects, garments, or ceremonial equipment, their thin-gauge construction allowing attachment to organic or metallic supports.
