AN EGYPTIAN ALABASTER JAR Naqada III, Circa 3200–3000 B.C. Carved from a warm, honey-toned calcite alabaster, this jar is fashioned with a gently tapering cylindrical body that broadens slightly toward the base. The surface displays fine natural banding and subtle variegation characteristic of the stone, with the exterior carefully smoothed to a soft matte finish. The rim is thickened and outwardly everted, its edge rounded and lightly worn, while the interior is hollowed to a consistent depth and shows shallow concentric tooling lines. Minor pitting and natural inclusions are visible throughout, enhancing the textured appearance of the material. The underside is flat and neatly dressed, exhibiting scattered mineral veining and small surface pits typical of ancient workmanship. Alabaster vessels of this type were widely used during the Naqada III period for the storage of oils, unguents, and other valued substances, their durability and translucence making them suitable for both domestic and funerary contexts.
