AN EGYPTIAN GRANITE FIGURE OF AN OFFICIAL Carved from a dense, dark speckled granite, the figure stands frontally in the traditional striding pose, the left leg advanced, the arms held rigidly at the sides with clenched fists resting against the thighs. The head is framed by a full, tripartite wig falling in heavy lappets over the shoulders and terminating in a rounded mass at the back, above a broad face with almond eyes set beneath arched brows, a straight nose, and full lips. The torso is bare and modelled with restrained anatomical definition, the pectorals lightly indicated and the median line of the sternum incised. Around the waist the figure wears a pleated shendyt kilt, its overlapping trapezoidal front panel finely incised with parallel vertical striations and bordered along the upper edge by a band of chevron ornament. A small vertical element rises from the brow, and the surface throughout retains a smooth polish that catches the light on the shoulders, wig, and thighs. The frontal pose, the disposition of the arms, and the pleated kilt with decorated waistband place the figure within the long tradition of Egyptian standing statuary produced for elite and courtly patrons. The ornament above the forehead, together with the elaboration of the kilt and the care taken over the wig, suggests a sitter of high rank rather than a private votive commission. The absence of a back pillar in the visible aspect, the treatment of the facial features, and the proportions of the torso are consistent with pharaonic conventions established for representations of officials and members of the royal circle, whose statues were placed in temples and tombs to receive offerings and to perpetuate the presence of the individual before the gods. Granite was among the most demanding materials available to the Egyptian sculptor, quarried principally at Aswan and reserved for commissions of consequence. Its hardness required prolonged working with abrasives rather than direct carving, and the labour involved in bringing a figure of this scale to a finished polish made granite statuary an emblem of status and permanence. The dark stone was itself associated with regeneration and endurance, and its use for the representation of an official signalled both the resources of the patron and the desired durability of his memorial image.
