AN EARLY ISLAMIC BRONZE HELMET, PROBABLY SELJUK, CIRCA 11TH CENTURY OR EARLIER Of domed conical form, rising from a flared lower rim to a low apex fitted with a tall iron finial, the bowl raised from a single sheet of bronze and now bearing an even green cuprous patina overall. A vertical iron reinforcing strap runs from the apex down the front of the bowl, secured through the crown by a series of rivets and terminating at the brow in an applied leaf-shaped plate. To either side of this central strap, two large domed rivets set with iron shanks project from the forehead, flanking a horizontal iron band that crosses the brow and is fixed by a row of small studs. The lower edge is pierced and reinforced by a continuous ring of heavy iron rivets, oxidised to a deep red-brown, which would once have secured a mail aventail or padded lining. Two further projecting bosses appear on the sides of the bowl, positioned above the temples. The surface of the bronze is engraved and punched over its entirety with fine ornament, worked against a stippled ring-matted ground. Vegetal scrolls, palmettes and split-leaf arabesques cover the crown and sides, framed by narrow bands of tighter interlace at the base of the dome. Traces of a broader inscriptional or epigraphic register are visible above the brow, though the surface here is heavily corroded and the specific reading is no longer legible. The engraved decoration is executed with a confident, even hand, the vegetal forms drawn out in long sinuous curves characteristic of the ornamental repertoire of the eastern Iranian world in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Helmets of this general form, with a rounded conical bowl, a central reinforcing strap terminating in a nasal or brow-plate, and a riveted lower edge to receive a mail curtain, belong to a wider family of headpieces used across the Iranian plateau, the Caucasus, and Central Asia during the period of Seljuk ascendancy. The type is documented in contemporary manuscript painting and in surviving arms and armour excavated from sites across Khurasan and Transoxiana, and it stands at the beginning of the long development that would culminate in the tall pointed helmets of the later medieval Islamic world. Bronze examples are considerably rarer than iron ones, and the choice of the softer metal here, worked in a single raised piece and then engraved across its entire surface, indicates a helmet made for display and status rather than for the rigours of open battle. The application of iron reinforcements, the brow-band, the vertical strap, and the rim rivets, is functional in origin but has been integrated into the visual scheme of the object, the darker metal contrasting deliberately with the ornamented bronze ground. The engraved arabesque decoration places the helmet within the broader ornamental language of Seljuk metalwork, in which vegetal scrolling and inhabited scrollwork against a ring-matted ground were shared across ewers, candlesticks, mirrors, and personal arms. That the same repertoire was carried onto a piece of military equipment reflects the close association between courtly patronage and the equipping of elite cavalry in this period, when armour served as a marker of rank and affiliation as much as a protective covering. This helmet exemplifies the transitional armour of the eastern Islamic lands in the period immediately before the standardisation of the tall pointed Seljuk and post-Seljuk types. The combination of a soft bronze bowl, integrated iron reinforcement, and an engraved arabesque surface makes it a rare survival of a form more usually known through fragmentary iron examples, and it preserves the decorative ambition that distinguished parade armour from utilitarian battlefield equipment in the eleventh century.
