拍品描述

A VIKING TWISTED GOLD RING, CIRCA 9TH-10TH CENTURY A.D. This Viking gold ring is formed as a circular band with a strongly modelled twisted design, giving the surface a rhythmic, rope-like movement. The gold has a warm, rich tone, with softly rounded edges and areas of light wear that emphasise its age and use. Its construction is simple yet powerful, relying on the sculptural effect of the twisting rather than added stones or elaborate ornament. Dating to circa 9th–10th century A.D., the ring belongs to the Viking Age, a period in which gold and silver jewellery served not only as personal adornment but also as portable wealth and a visible marker of status. Twisted and braided forms were especially favoured in Scandinavian metalwork, echoing wider Viking taste for interlaced, dynamic patterns seen in rings, arm-rings and other prestige objects. The substantial weight and restrained design suggest an object valued for both its material worth and its visual symbolism.
