AN AMLASH POTTERY VESSEL, WITH THREE SPOUT TERMINALS, IRAN, CIRCA EARLY 1ST MILLENNIUM B.C. An Amlash pottery vessel from Iran, circa early 1st millennium B.C., raised on a high flaring foot and formed with a rounded globular body. The vessel is designed with three long bird-shaped spout terminals projecting from the shoulder, interspersed with three camel protomes with elongated necks, while a tall arched triple handle rises over the central flaring rim. The warm buff-orange surface is marked by age-related wear, pale encrustation, firing variations, and scattered surface abrasions, emphasising the vessel’s archaeological character and sculptural presence. Amlash pottery, associated with the mountainous regions of northern Iran near Gilan and the southwest Caspian area, is noted for its imaginative zoomorphic vessels and ritual or ceremonial forms. Bird and animal imagery was a recurring feature of early Iranian ceramic production, often linking functional vessel shapes with symbolic or status-bearing motifs. The combination of avian spouts, camel protomes, and a prominent arched handle gives this example a strong visual rhythm, reflecting the inventive ceramic traditions of Iran in the early 1st millennium B.C.
