A BYZANTINE GOLD FILIGREE CROSS WITH GARNET Circa 11th Century A.D. Fashioned from high-karat gold, this cross-shaped pendant is composed of hollow-formed arms decorated on all visible faces with fine filigree loops arranged in repeating vertical and horizontal bands. The surface is further defined by tightly applied granulation along the borders, creating a beaded frame that accentuates the geometry of the piece. At the centre, a small cabochon-cut garnet is set within a circular collar, providing a contrasting accent of deep red. The suspension loop is broad and ribbed, formed from a coiled gold strip soldered to the upper arm. The surfaces exhibit a warm, even patina consistent with ancient gold. The reverse mirrors the front in its filigree arrangement, with the same beaded edging and openwork loop patterning, carefully executed to maintain symmetry across both faces. Gold crosses of this type functioned as personal devotional pendants within the Byzantine world, worn for both protection and expression of Christian faith. Their intricate filigree decoration reflects established techniques of Middle Byzantine goldsmithing, in which fine wirework and granulation were employed to create lightweight yet visually elaborate forms.
