拍品描述

A LATE ROMAN EARLY BYZANTINE GOLD & GARNET RING WITH BIRDS, CIRCA 4TH-6TH CENTURY A.D. Gold ring with a raised bezel in the form of a vase, flanked by birds (woodpecker) and containing a glass setting. The hoop of the ring is narrow and rectangular in section. The shoulders are modelled as small birds with large heads and short tails, their plumage indicated by fine stippling, and their eyes by small punched circles. Between them rises the bezel in the form of a squat vase with reeded sides, a foot-ring, and a flat rim with a beaded border. This contains a square cushion-shaped setting in blue-green glass. The sulphur backing is visible, as the stone does not fit the circular opening of the bezel. Internal Diameter: 2cm Weight: 10g
