A ROMAN IMPERIAL BANDED AGATE CAMEO DEPICTING A STANDING SKELETON, CIRCA 2ND–3RD CENTURY A.D. Finely mounted in warm-toned gold, this Roman Imperial cameo is centred on an oval banded agate, expertly carved to depict a standing skeleton in crisp relief. The natural stratification of the stone has been skilfully exploited, allowing the pale figure to emerge against a darker ground with striking clarity—an effect prized in Roman glyptic art for its visual drama and technical refinement. The skeleton is rendered with an arresting economy of line: the ribcage, limbs, and skull defined with careful incision, creating a haunting yet elegant image. The simplicity of the composition heightens its impact, drawing the viewer’s eye immediately to the stark emblem of mortality. Subtle surface variations and minute abrasions are consistent with age and long handling, while the cameo retains excellent legibility and sculptural presence.
