A ROMAN CARVED HEAD OF THE GODDES VENUS, CIRCA 1ST CENTURY B.C. A Roman carved head of the goddess Venus, dating to circa 1st century B.C. The head is finely modelled with idealised facial features, including almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose and softly defined lips. The hair is carefully arranged in waved sections, gathered at the back into a rounded knot, with a high diadem or headdress rising above the forehead. The carving preserves strong detail to the coiffure and facial modelling, while the fragmentary lower neck and losses around the upper headdress are consistent with its ancient condition. Mounted on a modern black display stand, the piece presents as an elegant sculptural fragment, reflecting Roman taste for idealised divine imagery and the enduring influence of Hellenistic models in depictions of Venus. Height of head: 5.5 cm.
