拍品描述
A CARVED JASPER CAMEO OF CHRIST PANTOKRATOR WITH CROSS REVERSE, 11TH-12TH CENTURY A.D. Superbly executed oval cameo carved in richly mottled red and black jasper, presenting a striking frontal bust of Christ Pantokrator. The finely modelled visage, with deeply set eyes, flowing hair and articulated beard, is framed by a cruciform nimbus. Christ raises his right hand in a formal gesture of benediction, while the left supports the Gospel book, its cover prominently adorned with a cross. The sacred abbreviation IC XC appears to either side of the halo. The reverse is powerfully engraved with a bold cross of elegant proportions terminating in rounded knop-like ends, enclosed within a neatly defined border, reinforcing the devotional character of the piece. The stone itself displays vivid natural variegation, ranging from warm translucent reds to darker inclusions, enhancing the visual depth of the carving. The surfaces are finely finished, with a lustrous polish that accentuates the sculptural relief and fluid drapery. A visually compelling and finely crafted devotional object in the Byzantine tradition, combining strong iconographic presence with the inherent beauty of the stone. Length: 2.8cm
