拍品描述

A ROMAN SILVER MEDUSA CAMEO RING Circa 1st Century A.D. Cast in Silver with a smooth, brown patina, this heavy ring features an oval bezel finely modelled in high relief with the head of Medusa. Her face is framed by curling locks, the features softly rounded and bordered by a beaded circlet. The shoulders are decorated with stepped, ribbed mouldings that taper into the thick, rounded hoop. The surfaces show light encrustation within recessed areas and minor smoothing at the high points consistent with age and wear. The underside of the bezel and the interior of the hoop are plain, the metal showing gentle concavity from casting and long use. Rings of this type, bearing protective imagery such as the Gorgoneion, served both as personal adornment and as apotropaic devices intended to ward off harm. Length of Cameo: 1.7cm Internal Diameter: 1.6cm
